Australian Animals
Since Australia has been an undisturbed and isolated continent
for so many thousands of years, it has developed it's set of
unique wildlife. Most of Australia's wildlife is not found
anywhere else in the world. All the animals on this page
reside at the Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas.
The Wallaby
is different than the kangaroo. It is smaller, stockier, and
has thicker hair than a kangaroo. Normally they are very timid,
but this one was raised at a habitat.
Koala
Koalas are getting more scarse in Australia and several laws
have been passed to protect them. A recent law was passed
that prohibits tourists to handle these calm creatures.
Tourists can still pet them, but they can no longer hold them.
The rumour that koalas get high from Eucoliptus leaves is
false. They do however, get 18 hours of sleep a day to enable
them to tolerate the heat.
Australian Birds
Most parrots and cockatoo's are still plentiful in the wild.
Watch out for Wombat
Signs like this are very common in Australia for wombats,
kangaroos, and koalas. Since Australia (population 19 million)
is mostly uninhabited, there are lots of places for the
animals to roam. This sign is right outside Hunter Valley.
