Ayers Rock, Central Australia
Ayers Rock is located in the Outback in central Australia
300 miles from the nearest city. Fortunately there is a
single resort with an airport 15 miles from the Rock.
The Aborigines still own the land the resort occupies, it
is rented by a leased agreement.
Ayers Rock Sunset
To see Ayers rock in person is a breathtaking experience.
It is the largest single rock in the world and seems to
just shoot out of the earth. It is 1000 feet high and
about a mile wide, it also extends 2500 feet down into
the earth. The color of the rock changes throughout the
day and the beauty peaks at sunrise and sunset. Ayers
Rock is a very sacred place to the Aborigines and they
still own the land the rock sits on.
The Barbie!
No trip to the outback would be complete without having
a real outback barbie. Here, your chef is preparing
chicken, beef and kangaroo.
The Climb
Monica and I climbed about 90 percent of the way up Ayers
Rock. It is one of the most terrifying experiences of my
life. You have to hold onto a chain and climb for about
30 minutes before you reach a flat section. If your not
holding the chain and you slip, you won't stop rolling till
you hit the red sand at the base of the rock. The area the
rock resides on is also owned by the Aborigines and they
respectfully ask that you don't climb it, since it is
sacred to them.
